Former U.S. Rep. Lynn Jenkins and former congressional chief of staff John Lawrence bring Capitol Hill experience and expertise to GSPM
WASHINGTON – The Graduate School of Political Management at the George Washington University has named former U.S. Rep. Lynn Jenkins and former longtime congressional chief of staff John Lawrence as Fellows for the 2019 – 2021 fellowship term. GSPM Fellows assume a variety of roles, including serving as guest lecturers, event speakers, and case study contributors.
"We are honored to have such experienced and committed political leaders, as Rep. Jenkins and Dr. Lawrence, joining us to serve as GSPM Fellows,” said GSPM Director Dr. Lara Brown. “Our students will greatly benefit in learning more about their career choices in public service and perspectives on politics."
Former U.S. Rep. Lynn Jenkins (R-KS): Jenkins spent two decades serving the people of Kansas at the state and federal level. She represented Kansas’s 2nd congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2009 to 2019. During her five terms in Congress, Jenkins held several leadership positions, such as Chair of the House Ways and Means Oversight Committee and Vice Chair of the House Republican Conference. Prior to being elected to Congress, Jenkins rose to prominence in her home state, serving in the Kansas legislature from 1999 to 2002 and as state treasurer from 2003 to 2008. Before entering politics, Jenkins was a certified public accountant, earning a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Weber State University in 1985.
John Lawrence: Lawrence was a prominent figure on Capitol Hill for nearly 40 years, most notably serving as Chief of Staff to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) from 2005 to 2013. He served on the staff of Rep. George Miller (D-CA) from 1975 to 1993, rising to the ranks of Legislative Director and Chief of Staff. Lawrence went on to become Democratic Staff Director of the House Committee on Natural Resources and the House Committee on Education and the Workforce before joining Speaker Pelosi’s staff. Lawrence retired from Capitol Hill in February 2013 and received the John W. McCormack Award for Excellence from Speakers Pelosi and John Boehner (R-OH) honoring his service to the House of Representatives and his commitment to bipartisanship. Lawrence earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Oberlin College and a Ph.D. in American history from the University of California, Berkeley.
Jenkins and Lawrence join former House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA), former U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA), former U.S. Rep. Albert Wynn (D-MD), and Main Street Partnership President and CEO Sarah Chamberlain as GSPM Fellows.
