Mark Phillips serves as Director of Strategic Communications for the National Defense University, where he is responsible for university wide internal and external communication programs, including media relations and legislative affairs. During a 26-year Air Force career, he served as a Public Affairs Officer in assignments throughout the US and in the UK, Spain, Holland, Bosnia, Croatia, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Thailand.
Prior to joining NDU, he served as Chief Marketing Officer at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, Senior Vice President for Marketing and Communications at Conservation International, and Vice President for Communications at the USO (United Service Organizations).
Phillips has created and led integrated communication teams of up to 50 public relations, marketing, social media, web development, fundraising, graphics, photo, and video specialists. He has led communication teams on operations in peacetime, in combat zones, and in disaster/humanitarian relief environments.
Throughout his career, Phillips has developed communication strategies and plans, managed multiple high-visibility projects, and served as spokesperson for multi-billion-dollar R&D and acquisition programs. He also provided expert counsel, communication coaching, and media preparation for C-suite executives by distilling complex issues so they are easily communicated.
He is completing a PhD in Communication at the University of Maryland and teaches graduate courses in Integrated Marketing Communications at George Washington University. He also serves on the Institute for Public Relations’ Measurement Commission, where he develops and promotes best practices for research, measurement, and analytics that support ethical, strategic, and effective PR. Phillips is accredited by the Public Relations Society of America, and is the founder and host of two podcasts: ‘Better PR Now’ and ‘Defense Matters.’
