In the first of our 3-part Agree or Disagree: Conversations Across the Aisle series, you will hear from two our of distinguished GSPM Fellows, and one of our own Legislative Affairs students in a conversation moderated by Dr. Casey Burgat.

Rep. Mike Bishop
Bishop represented Michigan’s 8th congressional district in the House of Representatives from 2015 to 2019. During his two terms in Congress, Bishop garnered appointments to key House committees such as Ways and Means, Judiciary, and Higher Education. He went to Congress after spending 12 years in both chambers of the Michigan legislature, culminating in a term as Michigan Senate majority leader from 2007 to 2011. 

Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell
Mucarsel-Powell served in the House of Representatives from 2019 to 2021, representing Florida’s 26th congressional district. She made history as the first South American-born member of Congress and the first Latina Democratic congresswoman from Florida. A fervent advocate for Latinos in the United States and throughout the Americas, she was also an influential voice in Congress for Everglades restoration and gun reform.

Matthew Pezzella
Matthew Pezzella is the Manager of Government & Industry Affairs for ASTM International, one of the world's largest organizations for the development of international voluntary consensus standards. After earning a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science from UNC Wilmington, Matthew began his career in politics as a fundraiser for Senator Kay Hagan's re-election campaign. Matthew then worked for the DSCC before transitioning to Capitol Hill where he worked as a Legislative Correspondent for Senator Claire McCaskill. He is in his second year of pursuing a Master's Degree in Legislative Affairs at The George Washington University.​​​​​​​
